On May 11, with the Cardinals 20-11, in first place in the NL Central by 3 1/2 games and looking all the world ready to run away with the division, I wrote this post, which contained the phrase, “I don’t think there’s been a month-and-a-half start to a Cardinals season I’ve enjoyed this much in the last 20 years.”
Since then, the Cardinals have gone 27-34 and are now 4 1/2 games behind the Reds and the Pirates. The trip I scheduled with my father for the beginning of August, to Coors Field, was supposed to be just a plucky little jaunt to see the clearly-cruising-toward-the-playoffs Cardinals. Now the season is falling apart.
I take full responsibility. I’m sorry, baseball gods. I take it back. I take it back! Just call this off.
