(Warning: Nerdy baseball post.)
I, like most fellow stat nerds, love the Three True Outcomes guys like Adam Dunn: walk, homer, strikeout, little in-between. Considering this, I think Donnie Veal, a lefthander who made his major league debut for the Pirates against my Cardinals yesterday, might be my new favorite player. He came in yesterday — his major league debut, I remind — and threw two balls to Yadier Molina. The third pitch was a home run.He then struck out Joe Thurston and Kyle Lohse on seven pitches. He then walked Skip Schumaker, Colby Rasmus and Albert Pujols on 13 pitches, loading the bases. He then struck out Chris Duncan on four pitches. This was his only inning of work, and, nothing against the guy, but I kind of hope it’s the only inning of his whole career. If you only got to pitch one inning in the majors your entire life, I’d have to think that would be the most exciting inning you could possibly pitch.
