On the topic of bad poster art, I humbly submit the cover of Albert Brooks’ Modern Romance as the worst DVD/video cover ever—or at least the cover with the biggest disparity between the movie (one of the funniest and most caustic of the ‘80s) and the artwork. Block that metaphor! —Scott Tobias

Happy [REDACTED] birthday to Sally Leitch, my mother. Her birthday gift is to get to fly into a rainy New York City, be taken out to her favorite restaurant in New York City and hang out with her grandson all weekend. Hopefully beats that lopsided heart keychain I made her in seventh grade shop glass.

All right, I’m back from the first leg of the Leitch Across America tour. Here are the pieces I wrote:

Introduced the whole concept of the series.
Visited the site of the new 49ers stadium and analyzed how wealth is moving out of the city, south to the valley.
Walked around San Francisco with Warriors guard Stephen Curry and his 10-month-old daughter.
Noted the similarities and differences between the fanbases of the Giants and of the A’s, as well as digging into their prospective parks.
Ranked the Bay Area in six different categories, which we’ll use to compare it to future cities on the tour.

I also had several Bay Area luminaries and experts on the podcast.

Thanks to Jim Cooke for that terrific graphic. Next stop: Atlanta, in July. Very fun, this. I hope you like it.

Starting a new series over at Sports On Earth: Leitch Across America. Every couple of months or so, I’ll be traveling to a new city and attempting to nail down what makes the fanbase and the sports culture click. I’ll do a different column about some aspect of the city/area every day, concluding with a comprehensive ranking doohickey at the end of the week. I’ll also have a different podcast guest from the city who can shed some light on the culture every day.

We’re starting off with San Francisco and the Bay Area. I’m there right now. Even when it’s rainy and grey, this place is just gorgeous.

Here’s the big introductory post for Leitch Across America. It’ll be fun.

(And also I’m aware the name makes it sound like I’m spreading my seed all over this great land. As far as I know, I’m not, though I suppose the trip isn’t over yet.)
